Does Charcoal toothpaste Whiten Teeth?

A set of lovely white teeth! Having white teeth is such a big desire in today’s time that many people have taken an interest in different ways to whiten their teeth in a cheap and effective way. While there are many different methods and treatments on the market today, Charcoal toothpaste has become the go-to product for at-home teeth whitening. From YouTube videos to online reviews, Charcoal toothpaste seems to be talked about everywhere for teeth whitening. But is it actually as good as people say it is? Does it actually whiten your teeth?

What is Charcoal?

According to Healthline, activated charcoal-the type used cosmetically in beauty products and toothpaste- is a fine grain powder made from wood, coconut shells, and other natural substances that are oxidized under extreme heat.

So how does Charcoal work?

Despite the internet trends, Charcoal toothpaste isn’t as good for your teeth as you think. Instead of whitening the teeth, what charcoal actually does is merely strip the external stains away from your teeth. Which is what creates the illusion of having whiter teeth. But this is quite harmful for your teeth because the Charcoal could also possibly erode the outer layer of your teeth enamel, which will expose interior tissue and increase tooth decay risks. We definitely don’t want that to happen!

Is there anything else I should know about?

Another thing with Charcoal toothpaste is that not only does it not whiten the teeth, it could also make your teeth appear more yellow and increase sensitivity.  According to the American Dental Association, also known as the ADA, the reasoning that charcoal could lead to yellow looking teeth is because by stripping away  the enamel, it is also wearing down the white layer of the enamel, which ultimately leads to yellow looking teeth.

On top of everything, when you apply charcoal to your teeth it could actually cause more stains to accumulate when the gumline is exposed to the solution. There are some people who have experienced dark color disfiguration to where the charcoal was applied.  Dr. Timothy Chase from SmilesNY also said that “There has not been a single study done that shows that using charcoal products for oral health care does anything good for your teeth at all,” during an interview with Huffpost

How should I whiten my teeth then?
