What is hydrogen peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound with the formula H2O2, it is also called dihydrogen dioxide, hydrogen oxide, oxydol, peroxide. It has a variety of uses from cleaning to personal care products. Additionally, peroxide is the key ingredient in teeth whitening products! Peroxide is the bleaching agent that helps with changing the color of your teeth. It removes the stain on your teeth via an oxidation process.

Is 6% hydrogen peroxide safe for your teeth?

The percent of hydrogen peroxide in teeth whitening products varies. When using it carefully, peroxide is an effective way to whiten your teeth! Yet, it is also possible that peroxide could damage your teeth, gum, and enamel if people overdo it. Normally teeth whitening products contain 3%~20% of peroxide, sometimes higher in dentist offices. For teeth whitening products containing 6% hydrogen peroxide, they are considered to be the most efficient in teeth whitening but also providing sufficient protection. On the other hand, teeth whitening products containing over 6% hydrogen peroxide are not safe enough to use on your own without a dentist's approval.

Teeth whitening gel usually contains more peroxide than other teeth whitening products, so people should not use it as frequently as using mouthwash and toothpaste. Whitening mouthwash and toothpaste contain less peroxide for long-term use so the bleaching process would be weaker and safer. A low amount of peroxide helps with killing bad bacteria which causes gum disease.
