Should You Try Teeth Whitening?

5 minute read

Whether you’re a beginner or have been whitening your teeth for years, the teeth whitening process can be overwhelming with the amount of information available and volume of whitening products circulating on the market. Here at Novashine, we prioritize the safety of our customers and try to explain our teeth whitening process as thoroughly as possible so our customers feel confident they are receiving the Gold Standard of teeth whitening. From the safety of teeth whitening to how long results last, we compiled a list of the most common questions we get about teeth whitening so you can feel assured you know all about the whitening process!

What is teeth whitening?

  • Teeth Whitening is the process of one of two bleaches, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, breaking up stains to make the color less concentrated on your tooth. The Novashine Teeth Whitening Kit uses a 6% hydrogen peroxide gel formula to penetrate stains. When applied, the hydrogen peroxide within the gel releases oxygen molecules, and paired with our LED light, the gel is able to work faster and more efficiently to remove stains.

Does teeth whitening work on everyone?

  • No. Yellow tones in your teeth are the easiest to bleach, more than brown or gray tones. Veneers, caps, crowns, and fillings will not whiten at all. If the coloring is due to medication or injury, the whitening may not be effective.

What are the cons to whitening your teeth?

  • The most common side effect of teeth whiteners is tooth sensitivity. This occurs when the bleach reaches the inner layer of nerves, called the dentin, and irritates the nerve. Sensitivity is usually temporary and you can try whitening again when the sensitive feeling goes away. High concentrations of hydrogen peroxide can often cause sensitivity, so we include a low concentration (6%) of hydrogen peroxide and include a desensitizing agent, potassium nitrate, in our whitening gel to maximize results without any added sensitivity.

How often should I whiten?

  • We recommend whitening once a day for 5 days when you start using a new whitening regimen! Then you can use your whitening products 1-2 times a week after the initial week in order to maintain your bright smile! We also recommend talking to your dentist about how frequent you should whiten. It is possible to overuse the bleach and damage the enamel or gums of your teeth.

Are whitening and bleaching your teeth the same thing?

  • “Whitening” is defined as the process of using bleach or other materials to make teeth look whiter. Whitening materials remove stains and other discoloration on the surface of the tooth. This could mean the product simply removes food or debris from the tooth. “Bleaching” is when the product contains bleach. A bleaching product either contains one of two ingredients, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These products remove surface and below-the-surface stains.

Is teeth whitening safe?

  • Generally, most methods of whitening are safe, such as hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening. However, some studies have shown certain methods and chemicals used within certain teeth whitening methods are too harsh for the enamel of our teeth. Chemicals such as PAP are proven ineffective for teeth whitening, and at-home teeth whitening methods such as using baking soda can cause small scratches on the surface of the enamel, making them even more prone for stains.

Do I still need to brush my teeth if I’m whitening them?

  • Yes! Brushing twice a day helps remove food particles and plaque that can cause tooth decay. Flossing once a day helps clean in between the teeth. Regular dental visits check for hidden oral diseases that may not be visible. Not all white teeth are healthy teeth. Whitening your teeth is only whitening the enamel of each tooth, it is not cleaning plaque or protecting from disease within your teeth. To help provide the deepest clean and maintain healthy teeth and gums, we recommend using an electronic toothbrush to brush your teeth in addition to your whitening routine. Feel free to check out our brand new Ultrasonic Toothbrush, which has 5 different brushing modes and uses 36,800 to help eliminate surface and plaque!

Is teeth whitening permanent?

  • The results of teeth whitening are different for everyone based on your genetics, eating habits, and oral care routine. Results from teeth whitening can range from lasting for months or even years depending on which teeth whitening methods you use. Drinking liquids such as coffee, tea, or soda can cause staining even after whitening. That's why we recommend touching up once a week to maintain your bright, white smile after reaching your desired shade in your initial week of whitening!
